Sunset Soundtrack

Deception Pass Washington, Author's Photo

It’s a bit of a walk from the campsite down to the beach. The view is worth it. Find a large piece of drift wood and take a seat. The show’s about to start. Headphones in, press play.

You can’t always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes
.

You get what you need.

The sun goes down over the pacific. It’s hidden from view by a thick grey cloud cover, but shines through orange. To the right over an island just off the shore, and again to the left over the water, dark orange clouds are painted with a broad stroke against the pink sky. It’s beautiful in an “overcast” sort of way. This wasn’t the day I had imagined.

No colors anymore
I want them to turn black.

The sun has neglected me today. Now it gives me these two fleeting glimpses, one to my left, one to my right. In between, it shows its true colors. Light-grey sky and dark-grey ocean separated by a thin strip of brown, the island on the horizon. I’m being mocked with crimson on either side while dead center is drab and dull.

It seems like a million years
That I’ve been standing here.
Holding on to all that holds me down.

Over to the far left I can see a piece of the shore jutting out into the sea. It’s lit up with the electricity from a thousand or so houses. I can’t see the people in the homes, but the tiny lights are my witness. I can imagine them watching television, cooking dinner, talking, laughing, moving. They're living their lives as I sit here on the beach trying to find mine.

Believe, believe in me.
Believe, believe.

The sun makes its inevitable exit. It will be back tomorrow. In this very spot, most likely with a similar finally to the one I’ve just seen. I won’t be here. But I’ll be somewhere, and wherever I am the sun will be there too. It wasn’t what I thought I wanted, but maybe this night is what I needed.

Lovin' this post (I suspect I'll enjoy the others too, once I have the energy/brain cells to dig in.)

Thanks for visiting and commenting on the Triumph. You nailed it. I liked it cuz it looked fast even standing still, and I couldn't resist all those tiny suns burning holes in my retinas.

BTW, saw you read the Ender books...another fave of mine.

Later!

Hurry Up and Wait.

Yes I know I said I'd have something to post in the next couple of weeks... three weeks ago. But now I really mean it. I'll have a new piece within the next week or so. I even have a title. Look for "My Mother Was A Teenage Infidel" sometime late next week.

More pretty pictures:

Yes, that's me. I'm on my old bike, a Suzuki GS500.

Check out NickyHayden.com! Nicky is currently leading the MotoGP World Championship after 5 of 17 rounds. The "Kentucky Kid," along with Valentino Rossi and the rest of the MotoGP heroes will be in California this July for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.

you make my feet sweat and the hairs under my arms stand up!
That was Stephanie's comment, if you hadn't already guessed. That was when she thought you had the Nick Lachey song on here. (Come on, I know you did. You think he's dreamy...)

Making Long Stories Longer

It's been over a week since my last posting. I thought I would provide a quick update. I am currently reworking the "Astroturf" piece posted below and will have a revised version in a few days. In addition, I am currently working on two or three other (shorter) pieces and will have them up over the next couple of weeks.

Stay tuned.

In the meantime, check out this cool picture!

EDIT: "Astroturf" has been revised. It will probably be revised again, but not for a little while. I'm going to try to work on some other stuff.

First off- I would like to say that you really should write a book. Your particular style of blending humor and technical information creates an emotional attachment. It is as though I have seen the events that have taken place and felt the rush/excitement of being their.

I would also like to say that I want more. For whatever reason, I feel as though I know you now, and at the end of your blogs I have a feeling of emptiness, like I haven't spoke to my best friend in a very long time. I hope that this is an encouragment to you.

*On a personal note: I miss hanging out with you. Our common interests and pursuits allowed us to make a bond that I can not explain, and when you are not here it is like a piece of me is missing.
